The Bible tells us the church is made up of people "called out" for a special purpose - glorifying Him by their attitudes, words and deeds. They are people who have realized their need of a Savior as God convicted them of their sin and gave them the gift of faith. They realize the only way to be saved is to trust in Christ's death and resurrection to atone for their sins.

A real church, whether they meet in a beautiful edifice of brick and stained glass windows, or in a warehouse or someone's home, is made up of people who wholeheartedly serve Jesus Christ. "Present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service... so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another" (Romans 12:1b, 5).

When Jesus said to Peter in Matthew 16:18, "upon this rock I will build my church," some wonder if Peter is that rock. 1 Corinthians 3:11 makes it clear: "For no other foundation can man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ."

Jesus is also the head of the church. "He is the head of the body, the church... that in all things He might have the pre-eminence" (Colossians 1:18). Clearly, the church is all about Jesus - most Christian churches even commemorate His resurrection from the dead when they meet on Sunday, the first day of the week. There is no place for disunity in His body.

Attending a church service doesn't make one a Christian any more than going into a garage makes him a car, but the Bible teaches in Hebrews 10:25 that it is important to meet together regularly with other believers for encouragement and fellowship. At church worship services we also receive teaching that helps us understand God's Word and His purpose for our lives.

The real church is in the hearts of God's people as they gather with others of like faith, called our from the world to fellowship and serve God in their church and their community. -Paul J. Twist
